Westminster Abbey tour with a private London guide
A Westminster Abbey tour is one of the essential visits on your trip to London. A private Westminster Abbey tour can take 90 minutes or up to 2 hours and can be tailored to suit your itinerary and interests. And we can adjust the tour for different age ranges which will suit a family group. The Abbey can be very busy in peak tourist seasons. But if you visit with a Registered Tourist Guide like myself then we use a separate ticket office and entry gate so that you can avoid the long entrance lines. This can be a huge time saver and help maximise your time in London. Read our testimonials below.
Highlights of a Westminster Abbey tour
• The 700 year old Coronation Chair
• Tombs of Queen Elizabeth I and Mary Queen of Scots
• The exquisite fan vaulting of the Lady Chapel
• Memorials and burials to great authors in Poets’ Corner
The Abbey has been the place of coronations since 1066, royal weddings and burials and has a history stretching back over 1000 years. We’ll see the 700 year old coronation chair, royal tombs and memorials to princes and princesses, poets, scientists and musicians. Learn about the coronations that have happened in this Abbey for 900 years and find out about the next coronation. This wonderful church holds burials and memorials of world famous actors, writers and poets. The Abbey was the setting for recent events such as the wedding in 2011 of Prince William and Catherine Middleton.
Once inside the Abbey look up and marvel at the skill of the medieval masons. And we can see the breath-taking and exquisite fan-vaulted roof and carved pendants of the Lady Chapel. Started in 1503 the Lady Chapel is a masterpiece of medieval architecture. It also contains the Renaissance tomb of Henry VII and is the spiritual home of the Knights of the Order of the Bath. The Abbey is one of the best examples of the medieval gothic style of architecture in England.
The reign of Queen Elizabeth II had a ceremonial start here in 1953 at the last coronation. And the next coronation will be broadcast to us on our TV screens from the Abbey. A visit to the Abbey will give you an insight into what it might be like to attend the next that next historic coronation event.
What other things can you tour in the area?
The Westminster Abbey tour can be included as part of a half day London tour. After a 90 minute or 2 hour Abbey tour we can take a Westminster walk to see Big Ben and Parliament. If you have young children a fun option is to take a ‘royal walk’ through a London park to view Buckingham Palace. There’s plenty of things to talk about and look at on the way. The Cabinet War Rooms which hold the award winning Churchill Museum are also very close by.
Or if you choose just to do the Abbey and we can spend a leisurely few hours exploring its history and architecture in depth.

What people said about their Westminster Abbey tour
Ms. Watts guided us through Westminster Abbey. We had 3 kids, and she was able to keep all 3 interested and entertained while imparting all kinds of historical facts. She was very patient with our difficult 8 year old. I would recommend her if you want your kids to get the most out of the historical sights in London.Chris, USA, April 2017
“My daughter and I spent a very pleasant afternoon with Nicola touring Westminster Abbey and the National Gallery. I can highly recommend her not only as a professional and knowledgeable guide, but also as a warm and thoughtful person. If you choose to book her as your guide, you will be very glad you did!” Lisa, Italy, 2016
“My family visited London from the US in July and were looking for a personalized experience of the many wonderful and historical sites of London. Nicky was an awesome guide and made our visit to Westminster Abbey, Churchill War Rooms and the Tower of London very special. Not only very knowledgeable about the sites and London in general but was great company! Highly recommended!” Dave H, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, 2015
